Jeanne Manford inspired PFLAG (parents, families & friends of lesbians and gays) following an incident in which her son, Morty, was beaten and ended up in the hospital. She lead a march in 1972 through Greenwich Village carrying a simple handwritten sign that requested, “Parents of Gays Unite in Support for Our Children.” A year later in 1973, a grassroots group started the organization that became PFLAG. PFLAG is now a national non-profit organization with over 200,000 members and 300 volunteer-run chapters in the United States.
PFLAG Salt Lake City was formed as a chapter of the National organization in 1993. We're proud to be part of one of the largest Grassroots LGBTQ-friendly organizations in the country, a safe welcoming space where LGBTQ and straight can come together to make a better world for everyone.
We, the parents, families and friends of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, celebrate diversity and envision a society that embraces everyone, including those of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. Only with respect, dignity and equality for all will we reach our full potential as human beings, individually and collectively. PFLAG welcomes the participation and support of all who share in, and hope to realize this vision.
PFLAG promotes the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through
- support, to cope with an adverse society;
- education, to enlighten an ill-informed public;
- advocacy, to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights.
Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.
PFLAG Salt Lake City is a non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status.
